Road widening hits a roadblock at 400-year-old Malvani Church

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC’s road widening work at Marve road has hit a block in the 400-year-old St Anthony’s Church, popularly known as Malvani Church.

Over a week ago, the civic body razed pending structures along Marve Road, barring the structures situated within the church premises owing to contestation from the church authority.

In the recent week, even as BMC issued notices to church office bearers offering compensation for the affected land parcels within the premise, the church has refused to budge, with the matter still pending in court. The portion that was to be pulled down includes the reverend’s bungalow along with a compound wall.

While the road widening project has been in the pipeline for several years, demolition had hit a roadblock owing to the hue and cry raised by locals over the civic body’s plans to raze the compound wall and the clergyman’s bungalow within the church premises.

Built over four centuries ago, St Anthony’s church comprises a cemetery, grottos of Mother Mary and St Anthony and a parochial house which was established in 1872. It is pertinent to note that while the church is a notified Grade II A heritage structure, the bungalow and the wall are not in the heritage list.

A major arterial road of the city’s western suburbs, Marve Road is replete with bottlenecks that hinder traffic and is a source of misery for residents of Malad, Malvani, Marve and Madh. Seeking to rid the route of bottlenecks and carry out road widening project, the ward office on May 23 demolished all pending structures along Marve Road, except the structures within the church compound.

As per BMC officials, an empty land parcel and a part of the parochial house (reverend’s bungalow) will have to be acquired to widen the road. A civic body official on condition of anonymity said, “BMC has held several meetings with church office bearers requesting them to hand over the land for the road widening project in the larger interest of the public. We have also agreed upon a monetary compensation to acquire the reverend’s bungalow and open land. However, the issue is sub judice.”

The official also maintained that BMC has acquired permission from Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHRCC) for going ahead with the work. “The MHRCC has said that the parts we intend to pull down are not heritage properties. And since development here is long due we can go ahead with the project. However, the matter is now in court,” the official said.

Speaking to The Indian Express, activist Godfrey Pimenta said, “The bottleneck that BMC speaks of is near Kharodi where some land belongs to the salt commissioner. Besides this, there are a number of hawkers and shopkeepers who park their vehicles outside shops blocking roads which are already very narrow and create a perpetual traffic jam in the locality.”

“Instead of obtaining land parcels from the salt commissioner and clearing hawkers from these prime locations, BMC is concentrating on an area which is sparsely populated,” said Pimenta. He said they are not against development and are willing to part with the said land which does not affect its heritage status.
